A very different animal from the 506-24! While the 506-24 could be accused of sounding too relaxed and soft, the 508-24 is fast, lively and bubbling with energy. The interesting thing is that it manages this without sounding analytical or otherwise electronical. The 508-24 is fluid and has velvety smooth highs, yet is one of the most enthusiastic players I’ve heard. This is a rare combination. A comparison with the Wadia 861 is very interesting, showing points scored for both the Meridian and the Wadia and it comes down to taste really. For the outlay, this is one amazing player. Note: in the setup menu there are interesting settings that can tweak the player’s sound to make it range from very relaxed to very speedy.
I really enjoy your reviews! My own stereo has only streaming, but I must admit that I sometimes consider playing cd’s again, because it sounds better without having to worry about Ethernet switches and cables. What are your thoughts on this?
Nice to hear, Mads! I totally get it. CD players are easy, affordable, and can sound great. But I have far too many thoughts on this subject to fit into a reply in the comments section. But if you have a more focused question, targeted at the device of the review you are commenting on, I’ll be happy to answer it.
