Although this player was just visiting and was only listened to briefly, it was immediately evident that it has a very different character than the resident Mark Levinson no390s. The van Medevoort seems to be all about dynamics, liveliness, and accuracy. It is fast and agile and well-detailed, with fresh and open highs. It is also quite upfront and somewhat dry but definitely not harsh. And even though it has a well-formed and grown-up bass, it comes across to me as more matter of fact, more grey than the Levinson. Or the Audiomeca, or the Krell, or Meridian for that matter. These characteristics are also evident when the CD350 is used as a transport. The point is: this is probably not a player for people who like music to be rose-tinted or otherwise gentle and romantic. For me, it sounds somewhat digital and lacking color. But if honesty and accuracy are what you’re looking for, then this player is probably hard to beat at the price.
