Review Context
This system was listened to in the context of the main system and its supporting infrastructure, using the Grimm MU1 and Aqua Diva M2 CD transport with the CH Precision C1.2 DAC. The cabling consists of Belden 19362 with Bals schuko and Oyaide C-004 IEC, Driade Flow Link Reference 808 RCA interlinks, and Driade Flow Reference 808 speaker cables. The Ayon amplifier was placed on an Artesania Organic Line Modular Floor Platform. The speakers were positioned on Atacama stands.
Listening
With a CD spinning in the Aqua La Diva M2 CD transport paired with the CH Precision C1.2 DAC, with the speakers in the ideal positions between and just in front of the Magicos, and using the Scorpio’s 8-Ohm speaker outputs, from the very first notes, the sound was seductively fluid, spaciously enveloping, and so engaging that I played one CD after another, and even a third, before pulling myself back together and focus on the review. This is always an excellent sign!
The Ayon/AudioSolutions combo’s sonic presentation leans towards the smooth and lush side while remaining rhythmically precise, upbeat, lively, expressive, and dynamic. However, it never feels thick, heavy, slow, or muffled. Moreover, I wouldn’t describe it as warm in the traditional sense; the sound is sweet, but there’s no overt plushness. Warmth also often implies a reduction of transparency in return for a pleasing richness or golden glow. Don’t get me wrong, the midrange has a seductively bloomy quality, just as one might expect from a tube amplifier. However, this is carefully balanced so that there is never a feeling of a strong overlaid character.
The Figaro B2’s fronts attach magnetically via invisible magnets.
Having familiarized myself with the Ayon sound through various components over the years, I can confidently say that the amplifier plays a crucial role in achieving this distinct sonic balance. EL34 tubes are known for their musicality, smoothness, and fluidity, which are present here. The Ayon amplifier relays these qualities perfectly while enhancing the realistic aspect of the performance with its robust power supply and substantial output transformers. The Ayon is not just a musical pleasure machine, but it also provides real power and control.
This may be a starter high-end system, but make no mistake: the performance thoroughly belies the combined retail price. The Ayon/AudioSolutions sound is ever so fluid, liquid, and easy to give in to. Oh, and it fills the 5×7 meter meter listening room with ease. The sound breathes entirely freely from the speakers, not just in a generic bubble, but with an actual sound stage that extends deeply behind the speakers.
By comparison, the CH/Magico reference system is cleaner, more refined, and more revealing, but that did not stop me from being impressed by the Ayon/AudioSolutions system’s lush and fluid delivery. The treble behavior, in particular, stood out for being open and extended yet never hard or aggressive. While the B2s are brighter than the Magicos, the silk dome tweeter delivers a smooth, sweet, and open top end that is airy and well-defined. Nevertheless, the tweeter never becomes harsh.
