Great recap, however you forgot to list CD162 which is a 1993 Philips Cd player.
I own a cd780 however it looks this model doesn’t like home made burned cds, no problem with studio recorded ones.
Hi Dexter, thanks for your addition. The CD162 is indeed missing on this list, as are probably a few more. That’s why the header reads “the large majority” and not “ALL” :-). If you look at the Philips DAC and Transport List (sourced from Vasiltech) you’ll see that it is listed there.
I’ve not yet had a Philips player not read CD-R’s and so I fear that your 780’s laser mech might have gone off spec. CD-R’s are harder to read and so are the first to start giving problems.
I’m missing the Philips CDC 875 which must be of year 1988.
Has a TDA1541A – SAA7220P/B with CDM-4/20 (regarding to Vasiltech).
I recently purchased one incl. remote control and user manual but there’s no hint of a manufacturing date.

Players were sold at (huge) discounts as time progressed until final sales (about 2 years after introduction) since newer models were made more simple and in greater numbers and at lower prices. The common public was not aware of the extend of the build quality, in general they just looked at the price, the functional features, the width and color (black or silver)
and the brand name to match the new CD player to their existing audio stack.
The difference in audio quality between a household CD player and the rest of the general household audio stack was huge. Nearly everyone wanted a CD player, sooner or later.

CD471 uses indeed TDA1541, but the “relaxed” version TDA1541-R1.
This should be mentioned.
In fact just one player, CD880, has the correct info about TDA1541 version (R1, S1 or S2).

To me they look identical inside (save for the headphone module in CD850).
